Tile Calculator

Calculate the number of tiles and boxes needed for your floor or wall project.

Formula: Room Area = L × W. Tile Area = (tw × th) / 144. Tiles = ⌈Room Area / Tile Area × (1 + Waste%)⌉.

About the Tile Calculator

Whether you are tiling a kitchen floor, bathroom wall, or a backsplash, getting the right tile count saves time and money. This calculator works with any tile size and accounts for waste from cuts, breakage, and pattern matching. Simply enter your room dimensions, tile size, and desired waste percentage to get an accurate material estimate.

The waste factor is an important consideration that varies by project type. For simple rectangular rooms with standard layouts, 10% waste is typically sufficient. Diagonal tile patterns, complex room shapes, and mosaic installations may require 15-20% waste. Large-format tiles in small rooms often generate more waste from cuts along walls and edges.

When purchasing tiles, always buy from the same lot number to ensure color consistency. Keep a few extra tiles for future repairs, as matching tiles from a different production run can result in noticeable color differences. Most tile retailers allow returns of unopened boxes, so ordering slightly more than calculated is a safe practice.
